Moscow Mule History
The Moscow Mule comes from the Buck family of cocktails, a category of cocktails with a spirit, ginger beer/ale and lime. The Gin Buck was created in the 1890s/prohibition era.
Born in Manhattan in the 1940s. The Moscow Mule came about when Jack Morgan from Cock'n Bull ginger beer and Cock'n Bull bar joined forces with John Martin and Rudolph Kunett from Smirnoff Vodka to push both their products. As a result, a new version of the Moscow Mule was born in 2007. John Martin was getting rid of dead stock in the Cock'n Bull restaurant.
Smirnoff Vodka made the famous Copper Mug for bartenders to pose with for polaroid photos and to push the cocktail's popularity.
There are many twists on this classic cocktail. Some of the more notable ones, for example, are a Mezcal Mule with Mezcal vs Vodka. Also, a Mexican Mule with Tequila instead of Vodka. Additionally, a New Orleans Mule is with Bourbon and coffee liqueur instead of vodka, and a Berlin Mule is with Jägermeister.
